I am having a hard time seeing how blogging would be beneficial in an Algebra 1 class. Students have a difficult time verbalizing math questions - it is even harder to get them to write. Maybe - the fun of using the computer will help them communicate better. To be truly beneficial in the math classroom, students would need to learn how to use some type of equation editor.
However, I believe that students helping each other has great learning potential. I also like the fact that I can follow all the posts and jump in to help as needed.

I agree, I'm having a hard time seeing this as a really beneficial way to communicate with the kids. But I could see using blog as a way for kids to write sample problems and share with their classmates.
ReplyDeleteWhat the students could do is start a blog that has all the questions with the answers.
ReplyDeleteIf the kids get organized then the first Algebra 1 class of the day each kid could try and remember and post 2-3 questions. If the whole class does this by 3rd or 4th hour the entire common assessment could be posted on the blog with associated answers.
We might start to notice that the later Algebra 1 test sections are really kicking butt.
I had a math class in college that was on the history of math, perhaps you can have them research how a particular problem came to be or find info on the mathematician who discovered it. Here's a site that has a a math history fact of the day- http://www-history.mcs.st-and.ac.uk/history/Day_files/Now.html

ReplyDelete... they would only need to follow this plan one year. Then they could go back in the archives and find all the answers. Test scores would soar!
I bet the fun of using a computer gets old real fast when they have to write about math.
